Gabino Álvarez
Gabino Álvarez, San Antonio, Texas. 2011.
Some weeks ago i was in San Antonio, Texas, working on a story for a Mexico City magazine. A few hours before i had to leave to the airport i went downtown for a walk, the were not many people on the street , we were 104˚F. During that walk I met Gabino Álvarez, he was born in Cuernavaca and has been living in the US for more than 20 years. That day he was returning from his home town after burying his brother.

"With the indifference of the mexican government, the indigenous people of this purépecha town in the state of Michoacán assumed the armed struggle against illegal drillers who, according to their reports, are protected by the organized crime."

AuthentiCity

I'll be showing part of my new series "SCARS" at the illy issimo / SVA “Revealing Purity and Authenticity in Urban Life” exhibition in NYC next week (october 4-10) along with Igor Aronov, Matthew Baum, Giselle Behrens and Caroline Shepard.
Here is a little explanation about the exhibition:
“Revealing Purity and Authenticity in Urban Life” is an exhibit that explores the straightforward language of photography as a means to investigate signs of authenticity and purity in an urban setting. Open to the public for one week only from October 4 - 10, selections from “Revealing Purity and Authenticity in Urban Life” will be presented at the illy issimo AuthentiCity Lounge, located at 632 Hudson Street, in New York’s famed Meatpacking District during the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival.
“Revealing Purity and Authenticity in Urban Life” marks the final stage of a photography project created by illy issimo’s partnership with New York’s School of Visual Arts, with the aim of celebrating and supporting young emerging artists and challenging them to explore signs of authenticity and purity in urban settings.
Open to SVA students and alumni, the project began with more than 200 photographers who were charged with capturing their vision of urban life. Through a series of juror selections and exhibitions, five of the 200 photographers were selected to continue their work and each received a cash prize of $3000.00. Project winners were then chosen to be featured in this dedicated exhibition at the illy issimo AuthentiCity Lounge.
The winning photographer will be announced during the exhibition and will be awarded a cash prize of $10,000 as well as an assignment to execute an original photograph for illy issimo.
